On International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia I wanted to share a short personal thought with you.
I am so proud of the country that I live in that so many people can achieve their dreams without fear or prejudice of who they are. My generation, and younger, are very fortunate to live in the UK. At the last general election the UK Parliament was the most LGBT+ inclusive in the world. My own sexuality is something that I struggled with greatly as a teenager, but now I am able to get elected to Parliament without even raising an eyebrow. That’s exactly how it should be!
But there is still much more to do here in the UK, and around the world. Last year over 100 people were murdered in Mexico for being LGBT+, last week we saw gay men being beaten by officials in Uganda and recently Trans Indonesians being forced into cruel exorcisms.
The freedoms that so many of us enjoy have been hard fought for over generations. We mustn’t forget this. This month should have been Birmingham Pride, an event which so many Brummies enjoy but unfortunately as with most events has been postponed. A celebration of all things LGBT+, a symbol of battles won, and reminder that we should never be complacent.
