I have been contacted by local residents concerning the proposed Flood Risk Works which are being put forward for Weoley Hill, Manor Farm and Valley Parkwall. This is part of a wider scheme covering the River Rea and its tributaries; Griffin Brook, The Bourn and Wood Brook.
The scheme will be opening four new flood storage areas, costing around £34m, which are designed for the event of heavy rainfalls or flooding, these storage areas will accumulate storm waters to slow the flow of the river with the aim to reduce the risk of flooding in urban areas.
Obviously these works will be important, but it's also essential that the works are carried out sympathetically to the needs of local residents and that a meaningful consultation takes place.
The Environment Agency have held an initial consultation meeting but a number of local residents are still unaware of the plans. I will be asking to meet both the Environment Agency and Bournville Village Trust to ensure that the process is as clear and as transparent as can be, and when the schemes proposals are not satisfactory how we can work together as a community, with the EA and BVT, to amend and improve them.
The consultation website link is below which further outlines the scheme proposals:
